IBM allows govt to access its software codes

Inordertounlockthebillion-dollargovernmentprocurementmarket,IBMCorpwillallowthegovernmentaccesstoitssoftwarecodes,aseniorexecutivesaidonThursday.

Thecompanyisthefirstoverseastechmajortopubliclyannouncesuchamove.

IBMagreedtolettheMinistryofIndustryandInformationTechnologyanditscertifiedinstitutestoexamineIBMproductsina"cleanroom"tomakesuretheyfitnationalinformationsecuritypolicies,saidSteveMills,seniorvice-presidentofIBMsoftwareandsystemsunit.

Callingtheplan"theabilitytoaddress'secureandcontrollable'Chinainitiative,"Millssaidthecompany'sgrowthinChinaneedsgovernmentsponsorship.

HedidnotspecifyifalltheproductsthecompanysellsinChinawillsubmittotheexamination.

CharlieDai,principalanalystatForresterResearchInc,saidthemovedemonstratedthecollaborativeattitudeofIBMtoworkwithChinesegovernmentandhelpinthedigitaltransformationforChinesecompanies.

"ItalsoshowsthatIBMisunderpressuretosustainitsbusinessgrowthinChina,addressingthesecurityconcernsofChinesegovernmentandecosystemexpansionaretwocriticalsteps,"Daisaid.

ChinaisonfullalertaboutinformationsecuritythreatssinceformerUSNationalSecurityAgencycontractorEdwardSnowdenunveiledmassivesurveillanceschemescarriedoutbytheUSgovernment.

InformationtechnologyproductspurchasedbygovernmentbodiesandState-ownedenterprisesallcomeunderthecategoryofgovernmentprocurementsector.Industryregulatorsarevettingalltheitemsforpossiblesecurityvulnerabilities.
