The university is formerly known as Guizhou Institute of Education, which was founded in 1978. In March 2009, upon the approval by Ministry of Education, Guizhou Institute of Education was transformed into a full-time undergraduate college, and renamed Guizhou Education University. In September of the same year, it began to recruit full-time undergraduate candidates. In December 2012, the university was entitled to confer Bachelor's Degree. In November 2015, the university successfully passed the qualification assessment of undergraduate education by Ministry of Education. In 2016, the university was included into the list of the project entities entitled to confer Master's Degree during the "13th Five-Year" period. In the past 40 years, the university has cultivated more than 100 thousands graduates dedicated to basic education, accounting for 1/3 of the total teachers at the basic education. We have cultivated more than ten thousand outstanding teachers and administrative staff for primary and secondary schools. Among the mainstay teachers and administrative staff in basic education of Guizhou Province, more than 65% are our graduates, who have made prominent contribution to the economic and social development of Guizhou. In accordance with our orientation of "applied, local, normal and internationalized education", we will further strengthen the quality construction, improve the conditions and strength of running schools, and enhance the ability to serve the local economic and social development.

The university covers an area of 779,622.76 square meters (1169 mu), including 421,628.90square meters of dormitories, and the total assets of teaching and research instruments and equipment are about RMB 127.1975 million. There are 13 schools (departments) and 44 undergraduate majors, offering 10 disciplines such as pedagogy, literature, science and engineering. We have 12,627 full-time students, of whom more than 5,500 are minority students, accounting for 43% of the total students. There are nearly 3,600 registered poor students, accounting for about 29% and 17 international students. The faculty team has 1,093 employees in service. There are a total of 841 teachers, 97 professors, 339 associate professors, 176 doctors and 550 masters. In the past five years, the university has undertaken 85 projects at the national level and 186 projects at the provincial and ministerial level. There are 124 crossing research projects; and the total amount of research funds has exceeded RMB 100 million. We have 1 National University Technology Park, 1 first-class regional discipline in Guizhou Province, 4 provincial characteristic key disciplines at provincial level, 2 provincial key disciplines and 6 provincial key supported disciplines. There are 11 first-class university projects, including the first-class university major cultivation projects at the provincial level, first-class university platform cultivation projects, first-class university curriculum construction (cultivation) projects and first-class faculty construction (cultivation) projects. There is 1 provincial "2011 Synergistic Innovation Center", 2 provincial university humanities and social science bases, 1 provincial key laboratory, 1 provincial academician workstation, 1 provincial maker space, 1 provincial computing platform, 1 provincial application service platform, 1 provincial science population base, 1 provincial talent base and 2 provincial university entrepreneurship demonstration centers.

The university, upholding the philosophy of open education, has established friendly cooperation with universities and educational institutions in the United States, Canada, Thailand, Taiwan and other countries and regions, joined the "International Education Union", and established counterpart relations with universities such as Central China Normal University, and signed cooperation agreement with Tencent Cloud Computing (Beijing) Co., Ltd., education bureaus of various cities (prefectures) in Guizhou Province, People’s Government of Wudang District, Guiyang as well as other enterprises, education firms and local governments for cooperation in education.

The university has won the honorary titles of the first batch(s) of "energy saving universities", “energy-saving model campus” and "civilized campus" in Guizhou's Universities. The university has been appraised as "National Training Base for Principals of Primary And Middle Schools in the Western Region of Ministry of Education", "Training Center for Guizhou Administrative Cadres of Education Sector", "Continual Education and Training Base for Secondary School Teachers in Guizhou province", "Training Center for Experimental Teachers and Experimental Technicians in Guizhou Province", "Environmental Education Base in Guizhou Province", and the only national “Chinese Language Education Base” of Guizhou Province.
